Walter Boyd, His Son Jesus Christ Our Lord (N. Ireland: Scripture Teaching Library, 2021), 461 pp.

It became evident as we emerged from the recent pandemic that many areas of the world, workers, and assemblies suffered loss. Missionaries lost contacts who either drifted away or passed away; assemblies lost members due to COVID and lost a measure of harmony over the issues raised by the pandemic. Gospel work came to a brief standstill in many areas. It is therefore refreshing to own that there was some good which emerged from the past few years. One such “good” result is the volume entitled His Son Jesus Christ Our Lord.
It was born out of the exercise of Walter Boyd to provide a weekly meditation for believers in his home assembly. The quality of the contributions was of such a level that it quickly grew in demand and eventually reached many countries. Finally, the suggestion was made to put it into book form.
The work consists of 52 meditations on the person of Christ. Since the vast majority of the meditations are from the Gospel of John, there is an added, perhaps unintended, benefit for readers. These are not merely simple meditations on a verse or a statement. Many of the articles contain an overview of various themes found in John’s Gospel. As such, they furnish a wealth of study material and insights for the student of the Word of God, while at the same time fulfilling their desired intention: feeding the soul. The author has done his homework! We are the recipients of hours of diligent study of the Gospel. In light of the paucity of good commentaries on the Gospel of John (this reviewer’s opinion), this justifies any serious student procuring it.
The meditations cover the Prologue of John with its majesty and depth to the cross and the resurrection. Additionally, there are meditations on sections in Hebrews (4:14; 6:19; 7:25; 10:12), along with a few other scattered verses of NT Scripture.
Mr. Boyd begins his volume with a consideration of John 1:1 and concludes it with 1 Corinthians 15:24, “Then cometh the end.” In between these Christ-glorifying “book-ends” is a treasure trove of truth to thrill the heart and strengthen the spirit of all believers. The volume is to be highly commended both as a study manual for the Gospel of John and as a weekly meditation to stimulate worship.
