Great Gospel Texts: 2 Corinthians 4:4-6

Out of the Darkness

The god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them …. For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts” (2Co 4:4,6 KJV).

Darkness and light. Blindness and sight. The god of this world and Christ. These verses are full of contrasts and bring us to three moments in the Bible where light shone out of darkness.

At Creation

The Announcement God made caused the light to shine out of darkness on the first day of creation, beginning the cycle of day and night. The Scriptures use this event as an illustration of the gospel, because when Christ comes into a darkened life He brings pure light!

The Blindness entered when the devil veiled the truth and convinced Eve that God was selfishly keeping His knowledge from them.   To this day, the enemy still blinds souls, using self-obsession, godless philosophy and immorality. He wants to ensure no one can clearly see the light of Christ the Saviour, and will use whatever he can to blind us.

The Course of this darkness is the slope of sin leading to the pit of destruction. Every human being is born as a sinner on this road and remains in the dark unless they recognize their condition and look to be saved from it. The light of the glorious gospel of Christ shone to take the darkness away.

At Calvary

The Absence of light during three hours when Christ hung on the cross was a sudden,  awe-inducing, universal event. This deep, dense darkness speaks of the sin of the world that the Lord Jesus took upon Himself in His body on the tree. There God dealt with sin by judging Christ, who was made sin for us.

The Brilliance of the light was glorious because it was Christ Himself. When the Lord Jesus said, “It is finished,” salvation’s work was done, and the light had triumphed and was shining out of the darkness. The instant that God was satisfied, the darkness passed.

The Conquest over the darkness was possible because the Lord Jesus Christ is the image of God, and God is Light. Christ is the Light of life, which burst forth at Calvary, and the darkness fled. His power over the devil and the darkness means He also has power to bring light to the soul lost in the darkness of sin.

At Conversion

The Age in which we live has a god that works diligently to keep every soul in darkness today in order to lead them to eternal darkness later. But God offers you an opportunity to come to the light. Will you remain blinded by the god of this world, or will you accept the Light of the gospel?

The Beaming forth of the light is the Christ of God illuminating the soul. When the light shines in, the darkness must go. This is the experience of every person that comes to Christ. They are now children of light, instead of walking in darkness.

The Conversion from darkness to light is what God desires for each soul. God wants to walk in light with those He has saved for all eternity. It’s possible for anyone today to turn from darkness to light. Has the light of the glorious gospel shone into your soul?
