Washed or Wasted

And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God (1 Cor 6:11).

It is interesting to note what changing one mere letter can do to a word. Back in the late 1960’s to early 70’s, drug users occasionally used the expression when under the influence, “Man, I’m wasted!” Though that was supposed to imply something desirable it was really quite an apt expression for their squandered abilities while in such a state. Looking at the condition that verses 9-10 reveal of the various Corinthian saints before conversion we see lives that were without question, “wasted.” But the spirit of God reminds those dear believers that they “are washed!” And not only their standing before God has been changed but their very bodies are now “bought,” (v 20), for the glory of God.

Many of us may not see ourselves in such a sordid list as in verses 9-10. Yet it is sad to think that too often “washed” lives are proving to be lives “wasted” for simply personal endeavors.
