Stephen Baker, The Money Maze: The Christian and Money (Kilmarnock, Scotland:
John Ritchie Ltd., 2021).
Reviewed by Reuben Miller
The topic of money is of interest to everyone. It seems every-
thing in the world revolves around it. Money has power, and with
it, tremendous things are accomplished. And yet, it is a point of
contention in many relationships. In some people, it brings out the
worst of selfishness and sinful human nature. But for those who love
God and His Word, we have not been left without divine direction
on the issues of financial management. The Money Maze is a short,
easy-reading book in the series “A Christian’s Guide.” In it, Stephen
Baker provides biblical direction and financial advice profitable for all ages, but especially
for young people starting out in life. He addresses topics such as renting versus own-
ing a house, borrowing and repaying versus saving and spending. The book presents a
biblical understanding of the temporal yet necessary aspects of dealing with money. It
addresses the contemporary temptation of living beyond our means by reminding the
reader of the transient nature of wealth, and encourages patience in acquiring posses-
sions. Giving is encouraged, with the promise of blessing, along with practical advice on
how to give. Throughout the book, Stephen’s wisdom shines through as he challenges
us with the question of where our trust really lies regarding our material possessions.
He echoes the biblical warning against the love of money and reminds the reader that
“godliness with contentment is great gain."
