During recent months, several young men have also been attending mid-week Bible studies, showing real interest in learning more about the Scriptures.

The meetings began on Sunday with a well-attended Sunday School program during which Gene spoke. Each night of the meetings opened with a testimony from a Christian from one of the local assemblies. It was refreshing to see the support from the surrounding assemblies nightly. The believers are waiting on the Lord to work with the seed that was sown.

San Luis Potosí
El Barril: The assembly held two series of gospel meetings in July. David and Jacob Nesbitt (San Antonio, TX) preached the gospel for five nights at the beginning, followed by Timothy Turkington for another five nights later in the month. (Timothy also gave ministry from Colossians 1 on that Lord’s Day when he and his family were present.) During both series, there was good attendance and interest in the Word that was preached.
The believers rejoiced that a young man professed salvation during the gospel series in July. At the beginning of August, Paul Thiessen helped for a week in another series; the attendance was good, and several young women showed interest in salvation but sadly, none professed. At the end of August a man who had professed in December was baptized, bringing joy to the believers. The assembly also appreciated a visit from Andrew and Hope Barnhardt (Barrington, NJ); Andrew spoke during the gospel meeting.

Jason Wahls then shared the gospel to the audience. At the end of July, A.J. Higgins gave ministry concerning marriage and the family for four nights. Believers from the assembly in Guadalajara attended these meetings and all appreciated the edifying ministry.
During the second week of August, the assembly held their annual VBS. David Nesbitt (San Antonio, TX) taught the classes and other believers helped in the related activities. The theme was “Five Distinct Trees from the Bible.” The regular attendance of the children was encouraging, with some returning from other years in addition to new contacts.

During the second week, Timothy Turkington preached the gospel with help from Joe Turkington (Barrancas, Venezuela).
Quintana Roo
Cancún: The assembly’s annual VBS took place August 10-14. Ryan Turkington (Jackson, MI) helped with the class daily. The assembly held special ministry meetings August 21-23 with David Cadenas, Marcus Cain and Timothy Turkington. On August 14, a 13-year-old passed away from leukemia, having been diagnosed 40 days before. He was the grandson of a sister in the assembly and was a regular Sunday School student for several years. The gospel was preached at his wake, and then the family asked for another gospel meeting at their home a week later. A large number of family members and neighbors listened attentively. Please pray for the spiritual needs of this family.
Special Report
Tobago
William Skates writes: For the month of July, I was invited to visit the Glen Road assembly on the Caribbean island of Tobago (population 61,000). Five assemblies exist on the island with no full-time workers to help them. However, missionaries of a previous generation have left a legacy that continues for the glory of God. The Glen Road assembly goes on faithfully for God and the saints were warm and appreciative of the help we tried to give. I had a week of ministry followed by two weeks in the gospel. A number of neighborhood visitors came into the hall, and the messages were also relayed over an outside PA system. We pray that the good Word of God will have reached many hearts with its saving power.
Venezuela
Sidney Turkington (Battle Creek, MI) writes on behalf of the VRF Team regarding the earthquake relief efforts: Thousands are still sheltered in tents and shelters provided by a now limited number of International Relief Organizations that continue to provide support. Operations have shifted from “Search and Rescue” to “Humanitarian Relief and Early Recovery.” Christians from several assemblies in Caracas continue to travel down to the disaster area on a regular basis to take prepared food, basic medication, and clothing to distribute to those in need. These efforts are praiseworthy but regrettably still fall far short of meeting the immense needs of thousands of disaster-affected people. The provisions brought down are distributed after a Bible class or gospel meeting has taken place. The response and desire to listen to the gospel message has been amazing. As well as disaster-affected groups of people that willingly sit and listen to God’s Word, different “Rescue Teams” have requested that the brethren stop and preach the gospel to their group. Quite a few reportedly have professed salvation. Please pray that they might be truly saved.
For the Lord’s people who have lost their homes, building and reconstruction efforts continue, especially in the areas of Moron, El Palito and La Guaira. Others have received financial help in purchasing a house or property where they can rebuild. We pray for wisdom in the correct administration of the funds received for earthquake relief purposes.
Additionally, on an ongoing basis the VRF continues to provide help with medical needs and emergencies of the Lord’s people in different areas of the country, as the Lord provides.
