The Nobleman’s Son Healed

One of the first things God reveals to man about Himself is the power He wields in His spoken word. Genesis 1 records how God created the world by speaking it into existence. Five times in the first chapter of the Bible we read, “God said … and it was so.” In each of these instances God used His voice exclusively in the work of creation. He didn’t delegate the many tasks of creation to others nor did He move physically. He spoke, and what He said came into being. In the New Testament the Lord Jesus often exercised the power He had in His spoken word. We read of Him saying, “Peace be still,” to calm a storm on the sea or calling out “Lazarus come forth,” to raise a man from the dead.

John 4 records how He miraculously healed a boy who was dying, though he was miles away, by simply saying, “Thy son liveth.” The boy’s father, a nobleman, had traveled a great distance to seek help from the Lord Jesus. When he found the Savior he asked Him to come heal the child. Because God’s spoken word has power over all, the Lord Jesus responded to the man’s faith by healing the sick boy, at a distance, with just three words. This desperate father witnessed firsthand the power of God’s word on display.

God is trying to speak to you today through His Word, the Bible. He has a message for you. In Matthew 11:28 the Lord Jesus said, “Come unto Me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” Don’t you find it amazing that God would use the same infinitely powerful voice that He used to create the world, calm the storms, raise the dead, and heal the sick, to call to you and to call me? The same power of God that was in “Peace be still,” “Lazarus come forth,” and “Thy son liveth,” is in “Come unto Me.”

God is waiting to hear your voice and answer His call, just like the nobleman who called out to the Savior to heal his son. Romans 10:13 says, “Whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” The Lord Jesus died on the cross for you. He shed His blood to provide salvation to all who believe on Him. He is speaking to you now, calling you to Himself. Won’t you respond to Him and be saved?
