On July 1, 1945, Elim Homes opened its doors for the very first time to commence a work for the Lord in the care of the elderly among the assemblies of Ontario. The humble beginnings arose out of the request of an elderly sister who, two years earlier, had expressed her need for care in the absence of immediate relatives in whom she could confide.
Five men had sat in a Toronto hotel room, pouring out their hearts to the Lord, seeking divine guidance, and counselling together how best to provide security, shelter, and love for elderly persons. It was known that the large home of deceased brother William Heels would be available at a nominal price, and would be a suitable residence in which to commence this new work. When opening day arrived, the Lord had provided enough money to pay for the property and to purchase the contents of the house.
Thus began a work of God that has continued to experience His faithfulness for over 65 years. From a single, large home with three elderly sisters as the first residents, Elim has expanded over the years through several land acquisitions and building projects to a property occupying half a village block, and a capacity for about 36 residents.
Constant improvements and enhancements are made to the Home as the need arises, and as the Lord provides. The spiritual tone of the Home is strengthened by morning devotions, weekly Bible studies, and noon hour messages with special speakers. Various groups come from time to time to visit and entertain, and special outings are made possible through the generosity of those who give their time and talents in this way. We especially value the support and encouragement of surrounding assemblies for their love and cooperation shown to the residents over the years.
Today, Elim Homes is a Retirement Home that enjoys an excellent reputation in the community and in the area hospitals. Teena and the Dietary staff work hard to provide delicious meals; Beth and the Housekeeping staff keep our facility spotless; and Marilyn and the Nursing staff go far beyond what is required of them to make sure our residents are safe and happy. Rob, our Maintenance Man/Groundskeeper keeps everything running well inside, and everything looking great on the outside. The quiet country setting and the beauty of the grounds (with its flowers, gardens, and walking path) make our back yard a sanctuary for all to enjoy.
Much has changed since 1945, but the atmosphere of peace and contentment, and the honoring of God and His Word remain the same. Over the years, hundreds of the elderly of God’s people have come to appreciate the dignity and respect with which our residents are treated, and to enjoy the fellowship of others who share the common bond of knowing Christ. It’s not until a believer spends some time here that there comes an understanding that Elim is indeed a special place … not perfect, but a place that has known much of the presence and blessing of God.
After a number of years of dedicated service to Elim, the Director of Care has indicated her desire to retire. We are currently looking for a suitable replacement. Interested candidates should be RN’s who have a desire to serve the Lord in this local mission work. They are encouraged to forward their resumés to our Administrator, Arlene Ball.
As of July 1, 2012, Elim, along with all retirement homes, is faced with the challenge of meeting new government regulations. We trust as we work towards meeting these demands that you will keep Elim in your prayers and thoughts.
