Lord Jesus! Forsaken by God,
Left to die on Calvary’s dark hill;
Ne’er one soul comfort extending,
All alone God’s purpose to fulfill.
Deep darkness and hell’s raging fury
Gathered around Thee, O blessed Lord;
Sufferings untold were Thy portion,
God’s wrath upon Thee outpoured.
It was for my sins Thou didst suffer
The scourge of the whip; and thorn crowned,
Being led as a Lamb to the slaughter,
Dumb, without uttering a sound.
Jesus! Thy Name so despised
E’en yet men take it in vain;
Soon in the fulness of glory,
In that Name Thou shalt ever more reign.
