Homecalls

Bill Treanor of Holmen, WI, on January 14, 2026, age 81. His mother was saved at the Ward Street Gospel Hall in Ottumwa, IA, when he was four. Bill heard the preaching of Elbert Matthews, often speaking on “Heaven’s Open Door and the Heart’s Closed Door.” He settled in the La Crosse area in 1970. A radio message in 1979 about end times caused him to read the book The Late Great Planet Earth by Hal Lindsay from his mother, and he realized he was lost. The last page quoted Revelation 3:20 – that “heart’s closed door” again! While looking at his front door, thinking, “Why can’t I open my heart’s door like that?” God revealed the Lord Jesus to him. Bill was received into the assembly in 1980. For many years he faithfully did the assembly’s accounting work. He is survived by his children Tandra, Terrie and Billie Jr.

Bernard “Ben” Sloetjes of St. Thomas, ON, on January 19, 2026, age 92. Ben was one of 11 children, raised in Gendringen, Gelderland, Holland. Saved as a young boy in Holland, Ben then came to Canada in 1951. He and his new wife Erna bought and operated a dairy farm near Dutton, ON, for many years until his homecall. Ben leaves behind Erna, his beloved wife of 71 years, four children and their families. He will be missed by the believers in the St. Thomas Gospel Hall where Ben and Erna enjoyed fellowship for many years. While always available to lend a hand, Ben was also known as a man of prayer who lived, loved and firmly believed in prayer. He enjoyed long-term mission trips to Zambia, Africa. Jim Bergsma spoke a tender yet clear gospel message to the large gathering at the memorial service on January 22.

Miriam Conard (née Rue) Hubler of Pennsauken, NJ, on February 17, 2026, age 93. She was born on August 23, 1932, and trusted Christ on June 8, 1966. Miriam and her late husband John (who predeceased her in 2020) entered the fellowship of the Pennsauken assembly in 1975 and happily engaged in all the joys and responsibilities of fellowship. She was an eminently Christ-like sister, warm, caring, sweet, kind and gentle. Miriam is survived by her sons Dave (Sue), Dan (Esther), four grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, a brother and sister, and numerous nieces and nephews. She will be greatly missed. A large number of her relatives share “that blessed hope” as well as the joyous reunion that lies ahead.

Doris Moore of North Bay, ON, on April 12, 2026, in her 98th year, at Northern Heights long term care home in North Bay. She served the Lord alongside her husband, Ken Moore, who passed into glory in 2005. She was saved on March 13, 1960, at the age of 31 during gospel meetings held by George Shivas and Stan Simms in the home of Olive Roberts in Dunchurch, ON. Ken and Doris were in fellowship in Chapman Valley, Arnstein, Sudbury and Nipissing Junction over the years. Doris’ strong faith led her to live a life guided by Christian values and was a testament for all to see. As per her wish, the gospel was faithfully spoken at her funeral service.

Earl Devries of Aplington, IA, on April 16, 2026, age 98. He was saved in 1960 while attending special gospel meetings in Stout, IA, with the late Leonard Debuhr and Eric McCullough through the truth of 1 John 1:7: “But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.” Following baptism, he was received into fellowship at the Hitesville, IA, assembly where he faithfully attended for 66 years. His cheerful countenance was an encouragement to all and he will be sorely missed. He was preceded in death by his wife, Magdalene, on April 18, 2025. He is survived by many nieces and nephews. Russ Nesbit spoke both at the service in Hitesville and at the graveside.

Maria Gaspar of Naugatuck, CT, on April 18, 2026, age 89. Born in Portugal on November 30, 1936, she was born again on August 31, 1997. Maria was in happy fellowship in the assembly at Terryville, CT. She raised a large family of ten children and was surrounded by her loving family of four generations, including 16 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Maria suffered many health problems in later life but persevered through all of them with much courage. Even then, she very seldom missed the Lord’s Supper, attending even in cold wintry weather. Her funeral was well-attended by family and friends. Please pray for her many unsaved relatives, mainly Roman Catholics, who reverently listened to the gospel preached by Thomas Donofrio and Stephen Morin. Maria was predeceased by her beloved husband, Fausto, who was also in happy fellowship in the Terryville assembly. She will be greatly missed.

Samir (Sam) Taufeek of Toronto, ON, on April 21, 2026, age 71. Born in Alexandria, Egypt, on June 21, 1954, Sam was saved in Baghdad, Iraq, in 1965. He was a gracious Christian, a faithful elder, and an evangelically-minded believer. Predeceased by his beloved daughter Grace on November 1, 2004, Sam is survived by his loving wife May, and their devoted sons Timothy (Hannah) and Andrew (Brandy). The large gathering at his funeral was an eloquent expression of the high esteem with which he was regarded. All the family members share in the blessed hope of a reunion around the throne of God and the Lamb.

Michael F. Wenke of Bryn Mawr, PA, on April 30, 2026, age 69. Born in Philadelphia on January 8, 1957, Mike attended Washington and Lee University where, for the first time in his life, he read the Bible in connection with his comparative religion course. The words of Ephesians 2:8-9 were used by God to lead him to Christ for salvation. Mike was a faithful elder in the Bryn Mawr assembly and highly esteemed for his warmth and spiritual wisdom. His six-year-long battle with cancer ended in victory as he entered heaven to be with Christ. He is survived by his beloved wife, Ilhee; his two loving daughters Kimberly (Ryan) Morrison and Michelle (Aaron) Cunningham, who await the Day of Christ and the moment of reunion; nine grandchildren; and nine siblings.

Doreen Williams of Langley, BC, on May 18, 2026. She was born on November 9, 1942, in Grand Bank, NL. In April 1948, while getting ready for school, she heard on the radio of the loss at sea of her beloved father, a tragedy that would shape much of her life. Doreen married Gordon Williams, and in the early 1970s they moved to Calgary, AB. A knock on the door from Betty Hull, a believer from the West Hillhurst Gospel Hall, changed everything. Doreen was saved in 1973, and in December of that year Gordon trusted Christ. They returned to Newfoundland and were commended in 1980 to the work of the Lord, eventually relocating to Grande Prairie, AB, in 1998. Doreen accompanied Gordon on visits to Ireland and Japan. After Gordon’s death in 2018, Doreen moved to Hilltop Manor in Langley, BC. She was buried beside Gordon in Grande Prairie.
