Yesterday, Today, and Forever

“Jesus Christ, the Same, yesterday, today, and forever…” (Hebrews 13:8).

Men change! Men die! Sometimes there is failure even in the best of men. If we do not see failure, then at least we see the fleeting and fragile character of life. Is there one who never changes? Our text tells us of the consistency of the Christ! The expression, the Same, is a Divine title. It reminds us of the words of God to Moses when Moses asked after the Name of the One who was sending him. God said, “I am that I am….say unto them, I am has sent me”! (Exodus 3:14).

The title was used of the Lord Jesus in Hebrews 1:12 where He is addressed as the Creator – “the heavens are the works of Thine hands…thou art the Same and Thy years change not.” In our text we are not only looking at creation, but we are reminded of His care. “But this Man (Jesus) because He continueth ever, has an unchangeable priesthood” (7:23). His character is unchanging — thus His care is constant, consistent, and changeless!

“God hath made that same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ.” (Acts 2:36).

“The same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him” (Romans 10:12).

“This same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven” (Acts 1:11).
